The room

A working studio with a lot of history.

Organica started in 1998 in a small corner of a bedroom and grew quickly from there into a full studio near the U of M in St. Paul, run by producer Andrew Crowley. Andrew ran Ear Illusion in Minneapolis before that, and he fronted Fat Tuesday, who had a couple of albums come out on Columbia/Red Decibel in the early ’90s. Since 2003 he's also been the musical director and organist for the St. Paul Saints.

The live room holds a grand piano, a pump organ, Hammonds and rotary cabinets on a warm wood floor, and it's built for players who like to track together.

Studio history: for several years Organica was home to the Neve 8068 console from Pachyderm, the Cannon Falls studio where Nirvana recorded In Utero. Andrew was an engineer at Pachyderm, and the Star Tribune noted in 2012 that Organica housed Pachyderm's console.

2003

“Black” at the ballpark, 2003

When the St. Paul Saints learned Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready was visiting, Andrew Crowley built an instrumental backing track of “Black” at Organica. He played the melody live on a Korg Triton Pro for the whole visit. The Saints later told him Pearl Jam had liked the footage and the music behind it, and part of it appears in the bonus material on their Live at the Garden DVD. In the official clip below, his ballpark circus-style music can be heard from the start, off and on, while McCready waits to come out. Then, as he walks out, “Black” kicks in at about 0:41 and runs to about 1:19.
